Following Jesus ? Where to ?

This continues my thoughts and struggles on Following Jesus - Where to ?

This post is dedicated to all those who are actually out there doing something about it !! Those who have heard the cry of others and the call of God. Those who are getting down with the down trodden and assisting in the well being of others (in most cases, doing it without thought of themselves).

Does being a follower of Jesus mean following him to church every Sunday ?  Leading a musical section on Tuesday night ?
Working in a fundraising/PR function during the week ?

I was fortunate to met a man the other day in my work as a Wills and Bequest Representative for The Salvation Army, who was in desperate need of help (although we didn't know it at the time).

A telephone call near midnight on the Long Weekend sat me up in bed as this man pleaded for me (and The Salvation Army) to help him with his addiction.  After about 15 minutes of conversation, I realised that (thankfully) he was not desperate enough to do something stupid, but was desperate to call for help.

As the mobile phone cut out, I found myself in a place where I felt helpless.  I called the Police and we discussed the situation.  I felt a lot happier knowing that there was some one else that could assist in this matter.  We both made the decision not to follow through until the morning as he did not make any thoughts to hurt himself or others.

The next morning, I called the local Salvation Army Officers in the town nearest my caller - They were only too glad to assist in my request for a physical visit and check up of his health and well being.

A visit was arranged and now we are in the process of getting him some help.  I pray for his journey through this addiction and thank God for his openness and courage to admit he has a problem and his genuineness in asking for help.

I pray, too, for the Local Salvation Army Officers and employees who work in the locations God has placed them - may you be blessed and encouraged in the work that you do for others.

A song played on the radio www.lightfm.com.au the other day that I thought appropriate for this post.

You live among the least of these
The weary and the weak
And it would be a tragedy
For me to turn away
All my needs You have supplied
When I was dead You gave me life
So how could I not give it away so freely?

And I’ll…
Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy, God
Follow You into the world

Use my hands, use my feet
To make Your kingdom come
To the corners of the earth
Until Your work is done
Faith without works is dead
On the cross Your blood was shed
So how could we not give it away so freely?

And I give all myself
I give all myself
I give all myself to You

I was also reminded of the chorus in the Salvation Army Song Book -

SACB 57
Where he leads me I will follow,
Where he leads me I will follow,
Where he leads me I will follow,
I'll go with him, with him, all the way.

Some Quotes from Servant Leadership to finish with:
